On Saturday 19th December the RMA concert band joined Southampton Choral Society for the concert band’s final performance of the busy festive season! Once again building on an already-established partnership, the band, under the direction of Maj (Retd.) Tony Smallwood doubtlessly “raised the roof” in majestic style in their Cavalry of the Steppes and Light Cavalry Overture.
Later feet were visibly tapping all around in this rotunda-style venue, in the Ray Woodfield selection of Christmas Melodies. And all this in stark contrast to a highly spiritual and ethereal programme by the choir .
In this concert surely among the most memorable moments was the unmissable beauty of Jonathan Yates’ trumpet solo Panis Angelicus and his collaboration with the choir in the highly evocative In Splendoribus Sanctorum – breath-taking!!!
