On Thursday 26th May 2016, the Royal Marines Association Concert Band were honoured to be invited to play for the reception at Lancaster House in London. Following the Beating Retreat on Horse Guards Parade the band presented itself in top form and, in the words of some of those honoured guests present, were “excellent” and achieved “a thoroughly brilliant performance”.
For the much esteemed gathering, the range of pieces included a selection of music from Oliver and Les Misérables, Billy Joel and Marvin Hamlish showcase favourites and a compilation of BBC Sports Themes. There was also opportunity for the guests to appreciate some traditional marches for which the Royal Marines Band Service has long been renowned; A Bridge too Far, Soldiers of the Sea, Sarie Marais and Cockleshell Heroes to name a few.
The appreciation of those gathered was clearly apparent; numerous pieces being followed by grateful applause – a recognition that the greatness of so many of these former Royal Marine Band Service musicians ever lives on!
