An entirely packed church welcomed the players together with their conductor Major (Retd.) Tony Smallwood, as they presented a sparkling range of openers balanced by a series of refined solos. Who else could follow the vigor and excitement of the famous overture Orpheus in the Underworld than the band’s much renowned solo trumpeter Jon Yates BEM! Jon’s performance of his own composition, Adagio for Trumpet, was then aptly followed by a catchy trombone and trumpet duet – All I Do is Dream of You (soloists: Alan Flood & Ian Kingshott) and a beautifully pure and controlled rendition of Caccini’s Ave Maria played on oboe by Sian Brace.
Indeed the variety of solo and full band sound was theme further continued through the concert; the whole church stirred by the rousing Midway March (Williams) and later Tony’s own Victory in Europe tribute piece. And the tributes did not stop there as the band and audience shared in the news that the band’s Chairman, Major Paddy Dunn had been recognised in the honours list with an MBE medal for his services to the RMA and especially the RMA Concert Band. We know that you, like us, congratulate him in such a well-deserved honour, which has enabled the band to achieve all it has to date!
See you at our next concert on Saturday 27th June, where the band join with Southampton Choral Society at Southampton Central Hall!
