Director of Music
Lt Col Steve Green
BMus (Hons), MA, LRSM, AMusTCL RM
Born in Norwich, Norfolk, Steve began learning the euphonium at a young age and joined the Royal Marines School of Music in September 1994, then based in Deal, Kent. During his training, the School relocated to HMS Nelson in Portsmouth, and in 1997 he joined the Royal Marines Band Portsmouth. He performed at major national events and undertook overseas deployments to Canada, Australia, Russia, and Poland.
In 2001, Steve was drafted to the Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC) Band in Dartmouth and was selected to represent the Royal Marines in the multinational NATO Band in Naples, Italy. On returning to the UK, he served with Royal Marines Bands in Portsmouth, CTCRM, and BRNC.
In 2008, he completed a Bachelor of Music (Hons), was promoted to Sergeant, and selected for the Bandmasters Course, receiving the Silver Medal from the Worshipful Company of Musicians. He served as Volunteer Band Instructor at HMS Nelson and Warrant Officer Coordinator at HQ Band Service before commissioning in 2013 and promotion to Captain. After a brief role supporting the Royal Navy’s South Coast Proms, he completed a master’s degree in orchestral conducting at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
He later held appointments as Director of Music at CTCRM, Assistant Director of Music Training in Portsmouth, and Director of Music for the Royal Marines Band Scotland, where he was promoted to Major. Returning to the south coast as Adjutant, Royal Marines Band Service, he supported HQ operations and personnel management. He also served as Staff Officer 2 and Director of Music Training before assuming his current role as Staff Officer 1.
Steve lives in Lee-on-the-Solent with his wife Amy, their two children and their Labrador, Roxy and enjoys paddleboarding, hill walking and running.
